Atlanta Mayor Host Dialogue and Luncheon in support of Talladega College

Atlanta, Ga. – The Honorable Shirley Franklin, Mayor of Atlanta, hosted a luncheon for a group of corporate, civic, and alumni leaders in support of Talladega College in Atlanta on Thursday, June 19th. The event highlighted the rich history of the 141-year-old Alabama Liberal Arts College and recognized two of the institution’s brightest stars. Rising seniors Shatoya Hinkle and Angel Guice are graduates of an educational program sponsored by Franklin. Talladega President Dr. Billy Hawkins says it is vital to have leaders like the Atlanta Mayor on Talladega’s team.

“Not only does Mayor Franklin understand our mission, but she supports it, fights for it, and ensures that it stays intact,” Hawkins said. “Having taught at Talladega, she has seen first hand the impact we make on students.”

Dr. Hawkins delivered that message along with a state of the school address to more than 50 education and business leaders including, Thomas W. Dortch, Jr., CEO of TWD Inc and a member of Talladega’s Board of Trustees; Maurice E. Jenkins, Jr. UNCF Sr. Vice-president and a host of key players from Atlanta’s philanthropic community. It was a time to dialogue about how to ensure that all Talladega students are afforded the educational opportunities they deserve.

“We always say that it’s about the children,” Hawkins said. “For me, it is more than talk because I understand that what we do in the classroom at Talladega will not only impact our students, but everyone they come in contact with - Talladega’s rich history will ensure a richer future for all who come through its doors.”
