TC PRESIDENT HAWKINS ATTENDS HBCUS WHITE HOUSE INITIATIVE

President Obama declares this week to be National HBCU Week

President Billy C. Hawkins, along with other presidents of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), assembled in Washington, D.C. this week to meet with President Obama and further discuss the White House’s commitment to HBCUs. Last February, President Obama signed an order to support the White House initiative on HBCUs, and he declared this week to be HBCU Week. Dr. Hawkins stated that the President also reiterated the need for HBCUs to play a role in addressing the workforce shortage by helping to achieve his 2020 goals towards workforce development. The conference concluded in Washington on Tuesday.

While there, Dr. Hawkins also met with, Dr. Helen T. McAlpine, a Talladega alumna and President of JF Drake Technical College in Huntsville, AL. Dr. McAlpine was nominated this week to serve on the Board of Advisors on Historically Black Colleges and Universities by President Obama. (Pictured above) Dr. McAlpine will serve as the convocation speaker during Founder’s Week and the Annual Homecoming activities in November at Talladega College.
