Job Summary
As a member of the Division of Student Life and Success, the Academic Advisor will provide academic advising services to Freshman and Sophomore students, including a specialized focus on advising student athletes. The advisor will serve as a primary resource for students in academic advising and academic support. The advisor holistically guides students to plan, learn, reflect, and engage in the world in ways appropriate for their educational path, career, and personal development and serves as a key member of the academic support team providing targeted assistance with academic success, coaching and support. The Academic Advisor will report to the Director of Persistence and Student Success.
Job Duties
- Deliver interactional academic advising experiences for assigned students, including specialized advising for student-athletes to help them balance academic and athletic commitments.
- Provide supplemental advising and registration assistance to all current undergraduate students, with particular attention to NAIA eligibility requirements for student-athletes.
- Ensure students understand and navigate the class registration process, understand degree and general education requirements, and are aware of academic policies related to athletic participation.
- Teach courses, as needed, that support academic success initiatives.
- Address all areas of academic concerns with students, including tutoring, study skills, and time management, and connect student-athletes with appropriate academic support resources within the athletic department and broader university.
- Make referrals to other points of service such as counseling, financial aid, career services, student life, and disability services, collaborating closely with athletic department staff as needed.
- Participate in professional development opportunities, staying current on best practices in athletic advising and NAIA regulations.
- Remain current in high impact practices as related to academic advising, student success, and higher education.
- Contribute to the success of the department by completing all other duties as needed to promote the vision, fulfill the mission, and abide by the values of the College.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, interpersonal skills (particularly in working with a diverse student population and student-athletes), and organizational skills are required.
- Computer literacy, including Word processing, Excel spreadsheets, and database management are required.
Minimum Qualifications
- Master’s degree preferred; bachelor’s degree required.
- 2 years academic advising or closely related experience.
- Commitment to working with first generation at-risk students
- Strong interpersonal and communications skills
- The ability to maintain confidentiality
- Ability to work independently and within a team
