Summary

Under the direct supervision of the Custodial Supervisor and the general supervision of the Director of Physical Plant (Facilities), the custodian performs all duties assigned and is responsible for maintaining the appearance and cleanliness of administrative buildings and offices, classrooms, laboratories, lavatories, chalkboards, curtains, and blinds.

Responsibilities

  • Duties include sweeping, scrubbing, mopping, waxing and polishing floors, replenish lavatory supplies, empty wastebaskets and remove trash, unlock and lock doors and windows, safeguard buildings or equipment from unauthorized use.
  • Assist in set-up for events and assemblies and perform other duties that are assigned. The custodian must use safe, appropriate methods and frequencies, which have been approved by the College.
  • Reports all damages and needed repairs to the Custodial Supervisor.
  • Replace trash receptacles, plastic liner (if soiled) and dispose of all trash in large trash bags and place into exterior dumpster. Wash trash receptacles if soiled.
  • Clean dormitories and Honor houses, guest quarters (Trustee House and Apartments) after being vacated.
  • Sweep and mop stairwells and other high traffic areas; remove debris from doors and corners.
  • Complete floor stripping and polishing on a regular basis.
  • Vacuum offices and all carpet areas when needed and perform carpet cleaning as required by supervisor.
  • Spot mop floors and remove spills as needed.
  • Remove graffiti and inform supervisor of any graffiti that cannot be removed.
  • Thoroughly dust all cleared flat surfaces; windowsills, desk, furniture, and other areas in offices and work areas; complete high level dusting as needed.
  • Complete full scale cleaning of restrooms daily. Disinfect sinks, urinals, and toilets. Wipe down toilet partitions, mirrors, doors and windowsills. Clean and polish, as needed any bright metal surfaces.
  • Clean windows, walls and water fountains in assigned areas.
  • On a daily basis, replenish paper (toilet paper and paper towels) and soap supplies; maintain well stocked and organize custodial break/sink/storage rooms.
  • Other duties as assigned.
 

Physical and Environmental Conditions

Assist with the operation of industrial cleaning machines, lift up to 30 lbs., and climb ladders up to 6 feet. Will work both inside and outside of buildings. Must be able to work alone; work with cleaning chemicals and clean classroom chalkboards containing chalk dust; move furniture and equipment.

Qualifications

High school diploma or GED equivalent. Prior experience in custodial services is preferred. Ability to perform essential functions described above. Knowledge of use and care of janitorial supplies and equipment; ability to work with cleaning chemicals; ability to move furniture and equipment. Must observe rules and regulations and be able to read at a level appropriate to the duties of the position. Must be able to follow simple oral and written directions and adhere to safe working practices. This position requires the ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relations with a diverse multicultural environment.
