Position Summary
Reporting directly to the President, the Vice President for Student Affairs/Dean of Students (VPSAEM) serves as a member of the President’s Executive Cabinet and is responsible for providing strategic leadership and administrative oversight for student affairs, enrollment management, student success, and campus life at Talladega College, Alabama’s first private Historically Black College and University (HBCU).
The VPSA serves as the College’s senior leader for student engagement, enrollment growth, student retention, persistence, graduation, and overall student success. The successful candidate will provide visionary leadership for the development and implementation of innovative strategies that enhance recruitment, enrollment, financial aid optimization, student engagement, student development, and student well-being while supporting the mission, vision, and strategic priorities of Talladega College.
As a member of the President’s Executive Cabinet, the VPSA collaborates closely with Academic Affairs, Athletics, Institutional Advancement, Finance and Administration, and other campus stakeholders to create a seamless student experience from recruitment through graduation.
The successful candidate must demonstrate measurable success in advancing enrollment growth, student engagement, retention, persistence, and graduation outcomes through strategic leadership, assessment, innovation, and evidence-based decision-making.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Executive Leadership
Serve as a member of the President’s Executive Cabinet and participate in institutional planning, governance, policy development, and decision-making.
Provide strategic leadership and administrative oversight for Student Affairs and Enrollment Management functions.
Develop and implement divisional strategic plans aligned with the College’s Strategic Plan and institutional priorities.
Promote a culture of excellence, accountability, innovation, collaboration, and student-centered service.
Serve as the principal advocate for students while balancing institutional priorities and expectations.
Enrollment Management and Student Success
Provide executive leadership and strategic direction for Enrollment Management operations, including Admissions, Financial Aid, recruitment initiatives, enrollment communications, and student yield strategies.
Develop and implement comprehensive enrollment strategies designed to increase student recruitment, enrollment, retention, persistence, and graduation outcomes.
Establish annual enrollment goals and performance metrics aligned with institutional strategic priorities and financial sustainability objectives.
Utilize enrollment data, predictive analytics, market research, and demographic trends to inform recruitment and retention strategies.
Collaborate with Academic Affairs, Athletics, Institutional Advancement, and other campus stakeholders to develop innovative enrollment growth initiatives.
Oversee recruitment plans targeting first-time freshmen, transfer students, adult learners, dual enrollment students, online learners, and other strategic populations.
Provide leadership for financial aid leveraging strategies that support enrollment growth while maintaining fiscal responsibility.
Monitor enrollment pipelines, application conversion rates, financial aid packaging, student yield, retention metrics, and graduation outcomes to ensure achievement of institutional goals.
Lead institutional efforts related to orientation, onboarding, student transition programs, and retention initiatives.
Provide regular enrollment reports, forecasts, analyses, and recommendations to the President, Executive Cabinet, and Board of Trustees.
Develop and implement data-driven student success initiatives designed to improve persistence, retention, graduation, and post-graduate outcomes.
Student Engagement and Campus Life
Foster a dynamic and engaging campus environment that promotes student involvement, belonging, leadership development, institutional pride, and personal responsibility.
Provide oversight for student organizations, student government, leadership development programs, Greek Life, and campus-wide programming initiatives.
Lead the planning and execution of major student-centered events and traditions, including New Student Orientation, Welcome Week, Homecoming, Family Weekend, leadership conferences, and other institutional events.
Promote a campus culture characterized by civility, accountability, inclusion, respect, and excellence.
Develop initiatives that enhance the overall student experience and strengthen student engagement.
Student Conduct and Accountability
Serve as the College’s Chief Student Conduct Officer.
Oversee all non-academic student conduct processes and ensure the consistent application of College policies and procedures.
Ensure fairness, transparency, due process, and compliance in all student disciplinary matters.
Promote restorative and educational approaches to student accountability and conflict resolution.
Student Wellness and Support Services
Champion student mental health, wellness, and holistic development through counseling services, prevention programs, health education, and wellness initiatives.
Provide oversight for student support programs designed to enhance students’ emotional, social, and personal development.
Develop strategies that engage parents, families, and support networks as partners in student success.
Promote a campus environment where students feel supported, connected, valued, and empowered to achieve their educational goals.
Residence Life and Housing
Provide executive oversight for Residence Life and Housing operations.
Foster residential communities that promote safety, engagement, learning, belonging, leadership development, and student satisfaction.
Ensure effective policies, procedures, staffing, and programming that support student success in a residential environment.
Assessment, Compliance, and Accreditation
Lead Student Affairs and Enrollment Management assessment, planning, reporting, and continuous improvement efforts.
Establish measurable outcomes and performance indicators for all areas within the division.
Support institutional accreditation efforts, including SACSCOC compliance, reporting, and documentation.
Ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state, and institutional regulations, including FERPA, the Clery Act, ADA, Title IX, and related requirements.
Budget and Personnel Management
Direct and manage divisional budgets in alignment with institutional priorities and responsible fiscal stewardship.
Recruit, supervise, mentor, develop, and evaluate divisional personnel.
Foster a culture of accountability, customer service, collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement.
Support professional development and succession planning initiatives throughout the division.
Institutional and External Relations
Develop partnerships with schools, community organizations, employers, alumni, churches, and other stakeholders to expand enrollment opportunities and enhance student success.
Represent the College at professional meetings, conferences, community events, and enrollment-related functions.
Promote and uphold the mission, values, traditions, and legacy of Talladega College and the broader HBCU experience.
Perform other duties as assigned by the President.

Required Qualifications
Master’s degree from an accredited institution in Higher Education Administration, Student Affairs Administration, Enrollment Management, Educational Leadership, Counseling, Psychology, Business Administration, or a closely related field.
Minimum of seven (7) years of progressively responsible leadership experience in higher education, including supervision of personnel and budget management responsibilities.
Demonstrated record of measurable success in improving enrollment, retention, persistence, engagement, and graduation outcomes through strategic initiatives and student success interventions.
Experience in enrollment management, admissions, financial aid, student affairs, student success, or closely related areas.
Experience in strategic planning, assessment, institutional effectiveness, and data-informed decision-making.
Demonstrated ability to build collaborative relationships across diverse constituencies.
Excellent communication, interpersonal, organizational, and leadership skills.
Demonstrated commitment to ethical leadership, accountability, student advocacy, and professional excellence.
Preferred Qualifications
Earned doctorate (Ph.D., Ed.D., J.D., or equivalent terminal degree) from an accredited institution.
Ten (10) or more years of progressively responsible leadership experience in higher education.
Experience working at a Historically Black College or University (HBCU) or demonstrated commitment to the mission and educational value of HBCUs.
Experience leading enrollment growth initiatives, admissions operations, financial aid strategy, retention programs, and student success initiatives.
Experience overseeing residence life, student conduct, counseling services, student engagement, leadership development, and campus programming.
Experience collaborating with or overseeing campus police or public safety operations.
Experience with crisis response, behavioral intervention teams, threat assessment, and emergency management processes.
Experience supporting accreditation processes and institutional effectiveness initiatives.
Teaching, faculty, or academic administrative experience in higher education.
