Ms. Charmere Gatson

Instructor, Mass Media

Ms. Charmere Gatson is a journalist and journalism/mass media educator who has more than 20 years of experience working on various media platforms and integrating digital technologies with journalism. She joined the Talladega College faculty in 2019 as an instructor in the Department of Mass Media Studies. Ms. Gatson has previously worked for several news media, including the Pensacola News Journal, WUWF Radio, USA Today, and – with her technical writing and financial management background – also has produced executive reports for the government.

A native Floridian, Ms. Gatson holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in communication arts (broadcast journalism) and a minor in fine and performing arts from the University of West Florida and several graduate-level credentials – a Master of Journalism (public affairs) from the University of Maryland, College Park; a Master of Business Administration (finance and accounting) from Regis University; and an Educational Specialist degree from Liberty University. Presently, Ms. Gatson is a candidate for a Doctor of Education with a concentration in educational leadership at Liberty University.

In academia, Ms. Gatson’s research interests are as follows:

  • Qualitative research, specifically narrative, ethnographic, and case study designs
  • Images of African Americans in the media
  • Diversity issues
  • Social media and its effects on African American youth's attitudes and sociocultural beliefs
  • Social media and personal branding
  • New technologies in mass media
  • Historical contexts of African American education
  • African American spirituality and faith development
  • Special education and gifted education topics
  • Disability inclusion in the media


Ms. Gatson is actively involved in her community through volunteer service and church ministries. Further, she holds memberships in several organizations including the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ), Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ), Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., and the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education, an organization under which she is named an AACTE Holmes Scholar for her doctoral studies.
