BIOGRAPHY

Dr. Dan Shope is an Assistant Professor of Sociology and serves as the Chair of the Department of Sociology at Talladega College.  His research focus includes Appalachia and Deindustrialization, Festival and Fairs in Appalachia, Popular Culture, and Research Methodology. In his instructional roles, Dr. Shope teaches courses such as Introduction to Sociology, Criminology, Social Problems, Research Methods, Sociological Theory, Cultural Anthropology, Social Psychology, and Popular Culture.  These courses intend to develop critical thinking among his students. Dr. Shope employs a student-centered approach valuing the development of each student’s academic voice and their critical thinking skills. His classrooms have lively debate as students examine social problems and develop strategies to reduce social inequalities and create research methods to study society

 

RESEARCH INTERESTS

Dr. Shope is one of the most published professors at Talladega College.  He has published a wide variety of articles and is working on two book manuscripts focusing on deindustrialization and coping mechanisms, and paranormal festivals and fairs in Appalachia and Appalachian hubs.
