Ethelbert Anum, class of 2024, will participate in the Society for Financial Education and Professional Development (SFEPD) Virtual Financial Literacy Camp being held July 22-26. The former student ambassador will serve as a camp counselor during the workshop that has invited rising high school students an opportunity to learn more about practical applications of financial literacy.
The Financial Literacy Training will focus on practical applications of money management concepts that adults encounter throughout their lives. With tailored learning for a diverse group of individuals, their skilled instructors will utilize interactive presentations to engage the group of learners. Anum reveals he applied for the camp counselor position because the nonprofit's mission aligns with his lifelong passion for teaching about the stock market and the importance of financial literacy, which he says will be a means of closing the wealth gap.
“SFEPD is a great organization that aims to teach financial literacy throughout the country by hosting events and partnerships with colleges, specifically HBCUs. This means a lot to me because I understand that there is a widening wealth gap between people of color and their white counterparts. This aligns with my efforts of creating consistent content that teaches people that look like me about the importance of their finances and stock market,” he said.
The Carson, California, native received his B.A. in Business Administration with a concentration in Finance and Banking from Talladega College in May 2024. However, Anum began his online financial literacy educational platform #InvestWithBert on Instagram in April 2022 on the heels of the pandemic. He has now expanded his crusade to TikTok and is reaching tens of thousands of people online each day. His target audience: young people.
“My avenue for change was creating the “InvestwithBert” educational platform to show people who look like me that they can do it too. I target the younger generation because the earlier you start investing, the better. They are able to generate higher returns due to compounding growth,” Anum said.
As he continues to develop his platform and influence, there is no doubt that Anum will inspire many more to take control of their financial futures with confidence and knowledge. His story serves as an inspiring example of how one individual’s commitment to education and empowerment can create ripples of positive change in the world.
