The Harvey Museum of Art’s monthly "Brown Bag" lunch lecture series continues on Thursday, October 5, at noon with a free, open-to-the-public presentation with Salaam Green. Green’s presentation, What Black Women Want You to Know: The Literary History of Art and Racial Healing in Alabama, addresses the contemporary and historical effects of racism in the Deep South. It is an exploration of literature featuring perspectives from African-American women and literary artists influenced by the history of Alabama’s diverse literary culture. Art and racial healing as a practice is about community-based sustainable change; Green’s racial healing work is informed by the Truth, Racial Healing & Transformation program, a comprehensive, national, and community-based process to plan for and bring about community transformations and sustainable change. She will also share information about that program and its applications and outcomes in Alabama communities.
A sought-after speaker and award-winning artist and writer, Salaam Green is the creator of What Black Women Want You to Know and the founder of Literary Healing Arts, which supports individuals and organizations in using writing, poetry, and storytelling to reclaim their voices and transform their lives. In her work as an advocate for racial justice, Green has spoken at the United Nations and facilitated and trained hundreds of leaders throughout the South, including through the Selma Center for Nonviolence, Truth, and Reconciliation and the UAB Institute for Arts in Medicine. A graduate of the University of Montevallo, Salaam is a certified practitioner and trainer for the Kellogg Foundation’s Truth, Racial Healing & Transformation process, a former Reimagining Justice and Women’s Policy Fellow, and a Community Village awardee for gender justice work in the South.
This event is possible thanks to the Alabama Humanities Alliance’s Road Scholars Speakers Bureau, which helps communities statewide bring scholar-storytellers to town.
