Dr. William R. Harvey Museum of Art Kicks Off 2025 with Engaging Lecture on Fine Art Collecting

February 11, 2025

The Dr. William R. Harvey Museum of Art proudly launched its 2025 Brown Bag Lunch and Lecture Series on February 7 with a fascinating presentation by renowned art collector and lawyer Cleophus Thomas, Jr. The event, titled “Giving Hoarding a Good Name: A Lawyer Makes the Case,” drew an enthusiastic audience eager to explore the world of fine art collecting.

Held in the Museum Lecture Hall, the lecture delved into the intricate relationship between personal passion and the art of collecting. Cleophus Thomas, Jr., a distinguished graduate of the University of Alabama and Harvard Law School, shared his unique journey from a young art enthusiast to a prominent collector, emphasizing the importance of supporting local artists and the cultural heritage embedded in their work.

“I believe art collecting is not just about ownership; it’s about appreciation and community,” Thomas remarked during his talk. “Supporting artists in your region is a way to validate and preserve your cultural identity while enriching your life with beauty.”

Throughout the lecture, Thomas skillfully navigated the fine line between “hoarding” and “archiving,” infusing humor and personal anecdotes that resonated deeply with the audience. He was met with laughter and applause as he recounted his experiences, revealing how his childhood, influenced by his mother’s jewelry business and a keen eye for craftsmanship, laid the foundation for his lifelong passion for art.

Attendees were particularly intrigued by Thomas’s insights into the transformative power of art and the responsibilities of collectors to uplift and support artists from their communities. He highlighted the significance of investing in local talent, as well as the emotional and financial rewards that come from such commitments.

The Brown Bag Lunch and Lecture Series aims to foster a deeper understanding of the arts while encouraging community engagement through thought-provoking discussions. As the series continues, the museum is committed to showcasing diverse voices and perspectives that contribute to the rich tapestry of the art world.

The Dr. William R. Harvey Museum of Art invites everyone to join in the upcoming events of the series, where art lovers and curious minds can gather to learn, share, and celebrate the vibrant world of art.
