Geornipha Milbin, a recent graduate and chemistry major in the Ronald E. McNair Program at Talladega College, will be attending Louisiana State University (LSU) this Fall to further advance her academic studies in the University’s Ph.D. program.

According to Milbin, her advisor, Dr. Pamela Brady, inspired her to apply to LSU’s Chemistry Program. Although she chose LSU, she was also accepted to attend the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s Chemistry Program.

“It feels great to have been accepted to both of these programs,” she said. I applied to both institutions because of their holistic approaches to research and science, but ultimately, I felt that LSU was the right fit for me.”

She is also the recipient of the Louis Stokes Health Scholars Fellowship, which is a multi-year scholarship to increase the number of qualified, competitive African American or Black students pursuing a degree in healthcare, including, but not limited to, internal medicine and family medicine, and pediatrics.
Milbin feels that it is essential to pursue advanced degrees because it enables individuals to gain a broader cognition of the discipline they are studying.

“Pursuing a degree in Natural Science is strenuous, but with the support of my advisors I was able to not only graduate but also set greater goals for myself and my future,” she added.
Milbin plans to become a scientist and mentor for minority students majoring in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
