Soulful music and the aromas of barbecue filled the air during Talladega College’s Vaccination Blues Concert on Friday, June 25th.
Over 700 attendees delighted in the sounds of talents from across the United States such as TK Soul, Sir Charles Jones, J-Wonn, and a host of others with the peace of mind knowing that the person sitting next to them was vaccinated.
“The primary purpose of this event was to ensure that the citizens of Alabama received their vaccinations,” said Dr. Billy C. Hawkins, president of Talladega College.
“Talladega College is a beacon in the community, and it is our duty to safeguard our people and remain proactive in the fight against COVID-19.”
The College was designated a COVID-19 vaccination site by the Alabama Department of Public Health. The purpose of the event was to promote and support Governor Kay Ivey’s goal of ensuring that at least 3.5 million Alabamians receive vaccinations.
Currently, only 11.9% of African American Alabama residents are vaccinated. Additionally, a little over 10% of the Alabama Latino population is vaccinated.
The Vaccination Blues concert aided in the aforementioned disparity and enabled the citizens of Alabama to return to a sense of normalcy.
