June 14, 2023

Talladega, AL—The American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU) has selected Talladega College Senior Vice President for Student Life and Success Dr. Pernella R. Deams to serve in the cohort of its 2023 Millennium Leadership Initiative (MLI).

Dr. Deams said, “I am excited to participate in the prestigious MLI, with the support and endorsement from President Vincent. My goal is to learn and grow as an administrator and support the mission of our HBCUs."

The Initiative is designed to diversify the presidencies at America’s colleges and universities. Since its establishment in 1999, nearly 700 higher education leaders have participated in the MLI and 193 have gone on to become college presidents or chancellors. It offers higher education leaders from underrepresented backgrounds the opportunity to connect with the expertise, experiences, and resources required to thrive as a college or university president. Participants receive a realistic look at what the role of a president entails including navigating the current higher education landscape and funding shortfalls that many institutions are experiencing.

Talladega President Gregory J. Vincent said, “We are honored that Dr. Deams has been selected by AASCU as a rising star in academic leadership. Her learning experiences in the Millennium Leadership Initiative will be an asset for all of us at Talladega. Likewise, Dr. Deams’ significant talents, skills, and experiences here at Talladega will be shared with others in the cohort.”
