Talladega College Announces Formation of Presidential Search Committee

Talladega College has announced the formation of a Presidential Search Committee to identify the institution’s 22nd president. The committee, comprised of a diverse group of stakeholders, including trustees, students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community members, will play a vital role in selecting the next leader for the 157-year-old Historically Black College and University (HBCU).

“I am pleased to appoint and introduce the Talladega College Presidential Search Committee members. Each individual brings a wealth of diverse expertise, professional interests, and accomplishments to the table,” said Ms. Rica Lewis-Payton, ‘81, Chairwoman of the Talladega College Board of Trustees.

Dr. Monique Gardner Witherspoon, a member of the Board of Trustees, will chair the committee. Dr. Gardner Witherspoon is currently serving her second term on the Board and is the Board’s Secretary and Chair of the Academic Excellence Committee. The committee includes the following members:

  • Dr. Walter M. Kimbrough, Interim President
  • Dr. Pamlea Brady, Faculty Representative, Department Chair, and Assistant Professor of Chemistry
  • Mr. Douglas Brewer, Talladega College Trustee
  • Ms. Kristie Brooks Purnell, ’91, Talladega College Trustee and President, Talladega College National Alumni Association
  • Dr. Robiaun Charles, Talladega College Trustee
  • Mr. Kelvin Cunningham, Talladega County Commissioner
  • Mr. Robert Dickerson, Talladega College Trustee
  • Dr. Isaiah Hugley, ’79, Talladega College Trustee and Immediate Past Board Chair
  • Dr. Glenda Johnson, ’81, Alumni Representative and former University Professor
  • Mr. Chad Jones, President and CEO, First Bank of Alabama
  • Mr. Calvin Littlejohn, Staff Representative, Director of Career Exploration and Professional Development

Lewis-Payton stated that identifying the ideal leader for Talladega College is a challenging but crucial endeavor. The committee is keenly aware of the profound impact this decision will have on the institution’s future and is committed to a rigorous and transparent search.

“Each committee member has agreed to make the significant commitment of time and dedication needed to identify highly qualified candidates for the critical position of Talladega College’s 22nd president. They share one crucial common trait: a deep devotion to Talladega College’s future,” added Lewis-Payton.

The search process will be supported by the executive search firm POLIHIRE, known for its expertise in identifying exceptional leaders for mission-focused organizations. Since 2006, POLIHIRE has built a record of unparalleled success in identifying leadership with a focus on excellence, accountability, and diversity in public-serving agencies and organizations. POLIHIRE will assist the committee in evaluating potential candidates based on their alignment with Talladega College’s mission, values and strategic priorities.

The committee will thoroughly review applications and conduct interviews to identify a select group of highly qualified finalists. These finalists will then be presented to the Talladega College Board of Trustees for further consideration and appointment of the President.

The search process officially commenced on December 4th with an initial meeting of the committee to discuss the search timeline and leadership prospectus.
