Talladega College Selected as Innovate Alabama Grant Recipient

October 13, 2023

Talladega College is proud to announce its selection as a network member and grant recipient of the Innovate Alabama IT & Cybersecurity Incubator Pilot program.

The funding, which totals $175,000, will equip Talladega with tools to expand its support for students interested in careers in tech. The measure will ultimately assist in addressing the shortage of cyber security and information technology (IT) professionals. Over a two-year period, the program will focus on providing students with practical experience, training, and industry certifications to make a significant impact in the workplace upon graduation.

The funding is part of a $9.3 million investment Innovate Alabama is making to fuel innovation-related projects throughout the state.

Dr. Gregory J. Vincent, president of Talladega College, expressed his enthusiasm for this initiative, stating, “We are pleased to be a recipient of the Innovate Alabama grant. This program serves as a significant step in strengthening the College’s position as a leading institution for IT education and training.”

Programs geared toward equipping students with the knowledge and skills to be marketable in today’s technological age are nothing new to the TC campus. The addition of the IT & Cybersecurity Incubator program aligns with the College’s existing IBM Cyber Security Initiative, Cybersecurity Center for Academic Excellence, and HBCU Apple Coding Project.

“We recognize the transformative power of technology in shaping our society and driving innovation across industries,” Vincent added. “We are committed to equipping our students with the skills, knowledge, and experiences necessary to excel in this rapidly changing technological landscape.”

As part of the program, Talladega College will offer paid internships for students, providing them with unique opportunities to assist local businesses in resolving technology-related issues. The internships will not only provide valuable real-world experience but also ensure students gain the necessary skills and designations to thrive in the IT industry.

Dr. Barbara J. Johnson, executive vice president and provost, is equally excited to see Talladega expanding its tech-related initiatives. She envisions the college being the destination institution for students seeking training and careers in tech.

“My hope is the IT & Cybersecurity Incubator Pilot program, and related initiatives will situate Talladega College as the institution of choice for students pursuing a degree in computer science or cybersecurity, and employers will seek out Talladega students for high-paying jobs,” said Johnson.

To the delight of Dr. Johnson, the institution has already started the process of engaging students who are interested in participating in this enriching opportunity. She believes the strategic moves made today will have long-lasting impacts on the program’s student interns and the IT industry for years to come.

“Upon graduation, students will be even more marketable and able to gain high-paying jobs in the IT industry, which aligns with Talladega's focus on social mobility,” Johnson added.
