Alabama’s oldest private HBCU achieves #1 in Best Value and surges across key academic and social mobility categories.
Talladega College has earned five top distinctions in the U.S. News & World Report 2027 Best Colleges rankings. The recognition marks a dramatic year-over-year rise across regional and national metrics and an improvement from three top spots in the 2026 rankings. The surge also comes after Forbes ranked Talladega 8th among private colleges and universities on its Top HBCUs List.
The U.S. News & World Report 2027 Best Colleges rankings highlight Talladega College's academic profile and institutional resurgence:
#1 for Best Value Schools - South (unranked in 2026)
#4 for Top Performers on Social Mobility - South (up from #20 in 2026)
#25 (tie) for Top Private Schools - South (unranked in 2026)
#29 (tie) for Historically Black Colleges and Universities (up from #52 in 2026)
#32 (tie) for Best Regional Colleges - South (up from #60 in 2026)
The dramatic rise reflects strategic operational and academic initiatives instituted since July 2025 under Talladega’s president and CEO, Dr. Willie L. Todd Jr., and his administration. Guided by the theme, “Forging Onward: Reimagining Liberal Arts Education,” Todd’s focus has included strengthening financial stability and organizational integrity, the academic experience, student success, and the College’s reputation.
“These rankings reflect what is possible when an entire community sets an audacious goal to reimagine liberal arts education for the modern era,” said Dr. Todd. “None of this extraordinary progress happens without the relentless dedication of our faculty and staff, whose hard work over the past year has reshaped our institution’s trajectory. To modernize its liberal arts model, Talladega has expanded faculty professional development, integrated experiential learning, and forged critical workforce-aligned partnerships. The efforts include new collaborations with Gadsden State Community College, Lawson State Community College, and the Alabama AI Center of Excellence.
