(Talladega, AL) Talladega College’s Virtual Opening/Black History Month Convocation speaker will be William L. Cody, M.D. Dr. Cody’s presentation, COVID-19 Origin and Current Management, can be viewed on Zoom on February 9, 2021, at 11 a.m. CST.
Dr. William L. Cody received his medical degree from the University Of Tennessee College Of Medicine, and completed his internship and residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Portsmouth Naval Hospital in Portsmouth, Virginia. Following his residency, he joined the medical staff at the Naval Hospital in Okinawa, Japan, where he served for 3 years. He became department head in his last year. In 1990 Dr. Cody was transferred to the hospital at Naval Air Station Jacksonville, Florida where he was department head of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Division. He started private practice in 1991 in Jacksonville and merged his practice with North Florida OBGYN in 1999. Dr. Cody recently retired as the managing partner of St. Vincent’s Division IV of North Florida OBGYN. Dr. Cody held the position of associate faculty member in the Division of Obstetrics and Gynecology at St. Vincent’s Family Medicine Residency Program for 30 years before retiring. He was actively involved in training residents. He also mentored and trained medical students, physician assistant (PA) students, and pharmacy students who rotated through his private practice.
Dr. Cody is a member and former Polemarch (president) of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Jacksonville, Florida Alumni Chapter. He chaired the fraternity’s annual charity golf tournament for 18 years. The proceeds from the tournaments have funded numerous scholarships to deserving high school seniors.
The William and Betty Cody Foundation also awards scholarships to high school students annually.
Dr. Cody was President of the Deerwood Rotary Club from 2014-2015. He is actively involved in the club’s annual fundraiser and club endeavors that include The First Tee of North Florida, Duval County Teacher of the Year, Early Learning Coalition of Duval, Samuel W. Wolfson High School Interact Club and St. Boniface Haiti Foundation.
He was President of St. Vincent’s Medical Staff 2014-2016. He is also a member of Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity, also known as the Boule. Dr. Cody is a past Sire Archon of Gamma Beta Boule. Dr. Cody is a Percy Julian Legacy awardee in the Boule.
He has worked with “We Care”, a community based program that provides patient care.
Dr. Cody has been operating on Haitian patients since 1995 through his medical mission work, and has gone on medical mission trips to Haiti for the past 11 years. He has worked countless hours performing over 200 major surgeries there.
Dr. Cody is a diplomat of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology. He is a member of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologist, Florida Medical Association, Northeast Florida Medical Society, and the National Medical Association. His awards include /the Navy Achievement Medal, The Navy Commendation Medal and The Order of the Cornette through St. Vincent’s Foundation.
He is married to Betty Ann (48 years) and they have a married son and two adorable grandchildren.
