Talladega College Women’s Cross Country Team Makes History with First-Ever Conference Championship Victory

The Talladega College Women’s Cross Country Team made history on Friday, October 17, capturing the first Cross Country Conference Championship in the College’s history at the HBCUAC Cross Country Championships in Danville, Alabama.

The Lady Tornadoes delivered a commanding performance, with seven runners placing in the top 20. Leading the way was Jewel Cross, who claimed first place while setting a new school record. The team’s outstanding showing also included:

6th – Mary Rodriguez
8th – Lamoy Duffus
9th – Aliana Taylor
11th – Sasha Ferguson
19th – Sarah Abraham


“This is a monumental moment for Talladega College Athletics,” said Athletic Director Andre Payne. “Our women’s cross country team has demonstrated exceptional discipline, teamwork, and perseverance. This championship is not only a reflection of their hard work but also a milestone that will inspire future generations of Talladega athletes.”

Head Cross Country and Track & Field Coach Terry Gaitor, III, expressed his pride in the team’s historic accomplishment. “These young women have trained with relentless dedication all season,” Gaitor said. “They believed in themselves and each other, and that belief carried them to the top. Making history together at the HBCUAC Championship is something they—and our entire Talladega College community—will remember forever.”

The victory marks a new era for Talladega College Athletics, showcasing the College’s growing success in intercollegiate competition and its continued commitment to excellence in academics and athletics.

Talladega College will celebrate this victory with a parade Tuesday, October 21st at 11:30 am near the Billy C. Hawkins Student Activity Center on campus.
