Talladega Freshman Music Major Gilliam Earns Vocal Music Competition Honors

Katherine Gilliam, a freshman music major, earned honorable mention in the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) vocal competition held at University of Alabama at Birmingham February 13-15. A total of 275 singers competed.

Gilliam competed in the NATS Alabama Chapter Lower Post High School, 1st year classical subdivision in Category 5. With a repertoire of selections that consisted of English, German and Italian languages, Gilliam placed fourth among 35 freshman women from other Alabama institutions. She was honored in the final concert which featured winners in over 15 categories.

“It is always fun teaching young voices,” said Dr. Pamela Burns-Bell, professor of music. “Category 5 is just the beginning for freshman singers. I look forward to working with Katherine as she progresses at Talladega College.”

Competitors represented institutions that included Alabama State University, Miles College, Oakwood University, the University of Alabama at Birmingham, the University of Alabama at Huntsville and the University of South Alabama. Students competed in genres that included classical, musical theatre and African American vocal repertoire with competitors ranging in age 9 years of age to mature non-student categories.

Gilliam is from the studio of Burns-Bell. She was accompanied by Dr. Huixian Wu, assistant professor of music.
