December 18, 2023

The Talladega College Tornadoes Gymnastics Program will make history on January 12 as they kick off their inaugural competition season. The Tornadoes are set to compete at the University of Florida Gators Quad Meet at 6:45 p.m. (ET) in Gainesville, FL., as the second Historically Black College and University (HBCU) in the Nation to sponsor collegiate women’s gymnastics.

Dr. Gregory J. Vincent, President of Talladega College, notes the historic impact of the team’s presence in the world of colligate gymnastics. “As we witness Talladega College Gymnastics embark on this historic journey, we are reminded of the transformative power of inclusivity in collegiate sports. Talladega's entry into this arena serves as an inspiration for all aspiring athletes, reflecting the enduring values of perseverance and excellence that define the spirit of collegiate sports.”

The addition of gymnastics to the Talladega College athletics program marks a significant milestone in collegiate gymnastics and in the Talladega community. The Tornadoes' debut will include tough competition from the University of Florida, George Washington University, and fellow HBCU, Fisk University. “This meet is more than the start of a new chapter; it's a testament to growth, empowerment, and the potential for everlasting legacies at Talladega College,” Vincent added.

Head gymnastics coach Aja Sims-Fletcher, an All-American alum of the University of Alabama Gymnastics Team (2014 and 2015 SEC Champions), notes being a part of a growing movement in college sports. “I feel honored to be at the helm of the Tornadoes gymnastics program. We are seeing first-hand the growth and positive changes within collegiate gymnastics.”

The Tornadoes debut symbolizes pride for Talladega College, its students, and the surrounding community. Sims-Fletcher appreciates the dedication and hard work her athletes have shown in preparing for their inaugural season. Sheis looking forward to witnessing the Tornadoes inspire young future HBCU gymnasts as a result of this historic season.

“Our team slogan this year is ‘‘Bigger Than Us” or #BTU, which is a reminder to the team of all their hard work and dedication as we write history. Every time we step into the gym this season to compete, we are encouraging hundreds of future HBCU gymnasts that they can be a Talladega Tornado one day, compete at the next level, and follow their dreams.” said Sims-Fletcher.

As the Tornadoes compete in the vault, uneven bars, balance beam, and floor exercise, they carry the weight of making history, inspiring future generations, and showcasing the talent and determination that defines this program.

Senior Biology major Alondra Maldonado (Bayamón, Puerto Rico) expressed excitement about the start of the season and the team's adaptability amidst changes. “I think that now, more than ever, I am excited for the start of the season because that is the time in which everything falls into place,” Maldonado said. “I’m excited to go out on the floor surrounded by a team of girls who understand each other on a level I haven’t experienced before. It’s exciting to be in a place where my personality flourishes, just like everyone else’s.”

Fans should expect high-level gymnastics from this inaugural team, which features athletes from the United States, Canada, and Jamaica. Coach Sims-Fletcher is prepared to shock the gymnastics world with the talent and pride of the Tornadoes. The world will watch as Talladega College begins a new chapter of collegiate gymnastics.
