Talladega Students Participate in Immersive Research Trip to Belize

Four Talladega students took advantage of a unique research trip to Belize to study cultural and environmental sites. Students from the Division of Natural Sciences and Mathematics–Love Jean, Leonard Richardson, Athaliah Townsend, and Dewinel Vazquez–were selected to travel with Dr. Andy Coleman, chair and an associate professor in the Biology Department, to participate in an immersive experience, exploring the rich cultural and ecological tapestry of the Central American country.

Alabama State Department of Education Assistant Superintendent, Dr. Autumm Jeter ‘01, to Deliver Keynote Address at 2025 Honors Convocation

Dr. Autumm Jeter, a 2001 graduate of Talladega College and the assistant superintendent for support services for the Alabama State Department of Education, will deliver the keynote address at the annual Honors Convocation on April 3, 2025 in DeForest Chapel. The event is held to recognize Talladega College students for their outstanding academic performance, leadership and service to the college community.

Dr. Virginia K. Newell ‘40, Talladega College’s Oldest Alum, Leaves Behind a Legacy of Service

Dr. Virginia K. Newell, the oldest alum of Talladega College, passed away at the age of 107 on March 14, 2025. A 1940 graduate of Talladega, Newell prided herself on living a life of service. In 1977, she and her Alpha Kappa Alpha soror Vivian H. Burke became two of the first Black women elected to the city council in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Newell went on to represent East Winston-Salem for 16 years.

Emmy Award-Winning Actor S. Epatha Merkerson to Deliver Address at Talladega College’s 150th Commencement

Talladega College, Alabama’s oldest private historically black liberal arts institution of higher learning, will celebrate its milestone 150th Commencement Exercises at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday, May 4, 2025 in the Student Activity Center Arena. Emmy Award-winning actor S. Epatha Merkerson will deliver the commencement address.
