What is a Resident Director?

The Resident Director is a full-time, live-in, twelve-month, professional staff member who reports to the Director of Residence Life and works with that person in the execution of his/her job responsibilities. The position includes community building and administrative management responsibility of a residential building/area with residents. This position will also have dual capacity in areas of Student Engagement & Leadership Development, Community Accountability, or Career Pathways.

Duties and Responsibilities Supervision:
  1. Supervise Resident Assistants as well as front desk staff.
  2. Coordinate weekly staff meetings to provide relevant information and clear communication.
  3. Conduct weekly or bi-weekly one-on-one meetings with staff members.
  4. Provide formal and informal evaluation and feedback regarding performance and expectations.
  5. Monitor and maintain in-hall duty rotation system.
  6. Oversee and review staff performance on the programming/community development model.
  7. Facilitate staff development, professional development, and on-going training for the staff.
  8. Oversee management of programming and staff development budgets.
  9. Assist with the selection and training of student staff members.
Community Development:
  1. Monitor and assist student staff with implementing Residence Life’s Community Development/Programming Model.
  2. Support the programming and policy-making efforts of Residence Life to create a positive living environment and facilitate the development of students.
  3. Create and maintain a developmental environment.
  4. Support the academic mission of Talladega College.
  5. Assess and evaluate program outcomes.
  6. Attend programs and events and maintain visibility in the hall/community.
  7. Advise the hall government and attend all hall government meetings.
  1. Serve on various committees as requested or approved.
  2. Attend Residence Life staff training, as well as related professional development opportunities within College Housing and Talladega College.
  3. Attend and participate in weekly Residence Life meetings.
  4. Attend bi-weekly one-on-one meetings with Supervisor.
  5. Coordinate and conduct hall openings and closings.
  6. Coordinate and conduct pre-break room checks.
  7. Facilitate room changes.
  8. Maintain essential office records including rosters, student conduct files, room inspections. Maintain accurate accounts of spending in the hall.
  9. Conduct fire drills in the hall as required.
  10. Maintain open communications with facilities staff.
  11. Assist in emergency situations as needed.
  12. Coordinate presentations for fall and spring RA training as well as on-going staff developments.
Crisis Management:
  1. Provide leadership during crises in the residence hall and in the greater campus community.
  2. Participate in a rotating weekly on-call system providing emergency assistance to staff and residents.
  3. Provide duty coverage during university breaks.
  4. Become familiar with and follow institutional and departmental guidelines regarding emergencies.
  5. Assist agencies such as Police, Fire Dept., Health Center in the case of an emergency.
Student Conduct:
  1. Clearly communicate, interpret, and enforce department and university policies to staff and students.
  2. Ensure staff members are appropriately confronting and documenting behavioral issues and concerns.
  3. Review all incident and police reports.
  4. Adjudicate student conduct cases, track sanction completion, refer cases as needed, and coordinate and consult with supervisor regarding high level conduct cases or ongoing situations of concern.
  5. Provide programs and other proactive educational interventions to minimize behavioral issues.
Student Relationships:
  1. Know the residents and maintain a high level of visibility.
  2. Serve as a resource or referral for information concerning college life.
  3. Promote student involvement in residence hall activities, hall government, and campus life.
  4. Provide counseling or referral for residents with academic, personal, or career concerns.
Summer Responsibilities:
  1. Work as a Summer Housing RD (summer school).
  2. Work summer conferences in the halls.
  3. On-call duty responsibilities.
  4. Committee assignments as needed.

Bachelor’s Degree and previous campus housing experience is required. Preferred to have strong administrative, communication, and leadership skills; previous experience serving on duty/call for emergency response; supervisory and management experience; and master’s degree.

The history of Talladega College began on November 20, 1865, when two former slaves William Savery and Thomas Tarrant, both of Talladega, met in convention with a group of new freedmen in Mobile, Alabama.
