Mission Statement

In keeping with the Mission of the college, the Division of Natural Sciences and Mathematics will strive to keep well educated versed and trained faculty within each department that is a part of the Division. Every effort will be made to keep the faculty current in their respective areas. The faculty being well educated, versed, trained and dedicated, will seek to prepare students for graduate school, professional school and the work force. Every effort will be made to instill in the graduates leadership qualities, moral values, intellectual excellence and hard work. Not only will the Division provide high quality training, educational and research experiences for students, others training and enrichment experiences will be sought and provided through collaborations and partnerships with graduate institutions and the corporate community. Students will be channeled into graduate and professional schools to pursue and earn advanced degrees.

The Division has and will continue to seek funds through grant writing and other means to provide financial assistance for students to earn their education. Not only do students benefit financially from grant efforts, they also benefit educationally by gaining the opportunity to participate in several research and training programs away from Talladega College campus during the summer. In addition, students are able to participate at conferences and present their research, thus providing a variety of exposure and networking opportunities for them.

Biology Department

The Biology Department prepares students for graduate and professional studies, as well as careers in biology. It also provides courses for students as part of their liberal arts education. The minimum number of semester hours in major needed for graduation is 34. The minimum total number of semester hours needed for graduation is 126.

Chemistry Department

The goal of the Chemistry Department is to provide majors with strong competitive backgrounds in chemistry which are adequate to pursue further study or gain immediate employment in the work force. The minimum number of semester hours in major needed for graduation is 34. The minimum total number of semester hours needed for graduation is 128/129.

Mathematics And Computer Science Department

Computer Science

The Computer Science Program is designed to prepare students for graduate and professional studies, as well as careers in computer technology and/or research. Upon graduation, Computer Science majors and minors will be prepared to assume strategic leadership positions in a computer-oriented field, as well as entering a graduate school to pursue a more advanced degree. Opportunities for research and internships are readily available both on-campus and externally. Overall, the emphasis of the department is on planning, management, and general problem solving, using the most current hardware and software technology, in addition to the skills of coding in particular computer languages. The minimum number of semester hours in major needed for graduation is 48. The minimum total number of semester hours needed for graduation is 128.

Mathematics

The bachelor’s degree program in mathematics prepares graduates for careers in both pure and applied fields. All students utilize the computer. Experience in computing has provided excellent job opportunities both before and after graduation. It is recommended that all math majors double major in math and computer science due to the nature of each curriculum content. The minimum number of semester hours in major needed for graduation is 42. The minimum total number of semester hours needed for graduation is 128
