The initiative, funded during the 2023 legislative session through Legislative Acts 2023-379 (SB87), provides financial support for the maintenance and improvement of HBCUs across Alabama. The total funding allocated for the program amounts to $10 million, with each act separately providing $5 million to support the HBCUs.

Talladega College will utilize the grant to undertake crucial repairs and renovations in three key campus buildings: Silsby Hall, Swayne Hall, and Savery Library. The projected start date for these projects is October 2023, with an expected completion date of March 2024.

The HBCU Deferred Maintenance Grant Program is a testament to Alabama's commitment to preserving and enhancing the educational facilities that serve as the foundation of its HBCUs. By investing in these institutions, the state ensures a conducive learning environment for students, faculty, and staff and promotes the continued success of Alabama's HBCU community.

The repairs and renovations to Silsby Hall, Swayne Hall, and Savery Library will address maintenance issues, improve energy efficiency, and enhance the overall aesthetics of these historic buildings. The investment in these facilities will benefit not only the current generation of students but also provide a legacy for future generations.
