The class of 2027 has arrived on the Talladega College campus.

Talladega College Welcomes Exceptional Incoming Class of Students

August 18, 2023

Talladega College (TC) is thrilled to announce the arrival of an extraordinary incoming class of students for the 2023-2024 academic year. The remarkable group of scholars epitomizes the spirit of excellence, resilience, and intellectual curiosity that has long defined the 156-year-old institution.

With rigorous selection criteria and a commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive learning environment, Talladega has attracted exceptional students from across the nation. The incoming class represents an array of backgrounds, cultures, perspectives, and achievements, setting the stage for an unparalleled academic community.

Derrick Robertson, vice president for Enrollment Services, has diligently worked to bring the best and brightest to the TC campus since his arrival in December 2022. As an esteemed practitioner of his craft, he feels a new era is being ushered into the College during an exciting time of growth and transition.

“The academic profile of the fall 2023 incoming class is most significant in terms of what makes them unique and exceptional. For enrollment leaders everywhere, there is certainly a lot of thought given to the number of students,” said Robertson. “I feel excited that we've been able to accomplish both, confirming a class that will represent a positive shift in the quantity and quality of students that will join our community.”

The incoming class exemplifies the prowess that Talladega College has become renowned for. Students have demonstrated exceptional academic achievements, remarkable leadership skills, and a dedication to community service. From valedictorians and accomplished athletes to talented artists and aspiring scientists, these students bring a wealth of talents and experiences to the Talladega College campus.

Robertson noted that preliminary numbers show that over 60% of the incoming class have GPAs above 3.0. He expects the new scholars to shift the trajectory of discussions in the classroom and have a significant impact in other areas of the Talladega community, including athletics and band, where the College saw a considerable uptick in the academic profile of students participating in these groups. He believes this distinguished group will raise the bar and continue the excellence legacy at the institution.

In changing the profile of the modern TC student, Robertson said that the College had to take a critical look at admissions requirements. However, these changes still allow all students to join TC’s community of scholars through elevated student support measures.

“Talladega College introduced new admission standards. Particularly, students with unweighted GPAs of 3.0 and above are eligible for assured admission to the College,” Robertson added. “In addition, the College introduced its Emerging Scholars Program for those students whose academic profile did not meet the criteria for assured admission. This shift in the admissions standards set the stage for the recruitment and enrollment of the more academically strong class.”

The incoming class will be supported by Talladega’s distinguished faculty and robust student support services. Preparations have been made to ensure TC students delve into a wide range of academic disciplines, fostering critical thinking, creativity, and innovation—all factors which will benefit the class of 2027 and returning students alike.

“The fall 2023 incoming class is a dynamic group that brings their many different backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives to campus to create a vibrant learning community. It's been an absolute pleasure to learn about and hear from family members and to get a sense of what makes each individual student excited for their future,” Robertson shared. “The hallmark of a small, private liberal arts college, especially an HBCU, is offering students the benefit of feeling known, embraced, accepted, and celebrated, much like their family at home.”

Some points of pride Robertson shared reflected in the incoming group include:

  • A wide array of academic interests
  • 60% are first-generation students
  • 20+ countries represented
  • 83% In-State - 16% Out of State

The exceptional caliber of the incoming class reflects not only Talladega College's commitment to academic excellence but also its dedication to nurturing the next generation of leaders and change-makers. The diverse perspectives and talents these students bring will undoubtedly enrich the campus community and contribute to a vibrant intellectual atmosphere.

“I believe our current community of scholars will accept the call to peer mentorship and welcome the opportunity to share in other aspects of the first-year student experience that helps our incoming students to successfully make the transition,” Robertson touted. “They will carry the torch for introducing our New Degans to student leadership opportunities, serve as the peer tutors/peer mentors in our Student Success Center, and create a sense of belonging and meaningful engagement in our living-learning communities. Our current community of scholars are our partners in welcoming and onboarding the students, and we anticipate that together they will push and encourage each other to grow and develop as members of this community.”
