Talladega College to Honor Black History Month With Convocation Featuring Notable Alumnus Rockell Metcalf ’85

January 23, 2024

Talladega College is pleased to announce its annual Black History Month Convocation that will be held on Thursday, February 8, at 11:00 a.m., in the historic DeForest Chapel. The College cordially invites community members, alumni, and supporters to commemorate the rich tapestry of Black history by joining us for this educational and inspiring event.

Esteemed alumnus Rockell Metcalf, who has had a significant impact in securities law, is the keynote speaker. Metcalf, a member of the Talladega College class of 1985, currently serves as Vice President and Chief Counsel of Marketing at Prudential Financial. His academic accolades include an LL.M. from Columbia Law School, where he was a part of the Student Honors Program of the Securities and Exchange Commission, and a J.D. from Mitchell Hamline School of Law, where his role as Executive Editor of the Law Review distinguished his legal acumen.

Preceding law school, Metcalf was a dedicated student at Talladega College, where he graduated with High Distinction with a B.A. in Biology. His commitment to leadership was evident through his service as student body president and Polemarch of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. Beyond his legal expertise, Metcalf has made his mark in the entertainment industry as co-executive producer and writer of the award-winning documentary, “The Contradictions of Fair Hope,” and is a published co-author of “The Practical Guide to Broker-Dealer Regulation.”

We are also most fortunate to welcome to Convocation the renowned and award-winning actress S. Epatha Merkerson. Ms. Merkerson is the recipient of many notable acting accolades for her work on stage, television, and the big screen, including an Emmy Award, a Golden Globe Award, a Screen Actors Guild Award, four NAACP Image Awards, two Obie Awards, and two Tony award nominations. A true inspiration who brings great depth, passion and purpose to her roles, Ms. Merkerson is a treasure and we are honored to have her introduce Mr. Metcalf as a part of the Convocation Program.

The convocation promises to be a memorable occasion, bridging the past and the present through the powerful narratives of Black history and the ongoing contributions of African Americans to our society.
