The Office of Wellness, Counseling and ADA Services aids in the development of the whole student. Professional counseling services help students learn to resolve personal difficulties and acquire healthy coping skills and knowledge that will enable them to better take advantage of all campus life experiences. 


Wellness/Counseling Services 

The Office of Wellness, Counseling and ADA Services offers free and confidential individual and group counseling on an as needed basis as well as referral services to outside counseling agencies if necessary. Services are offered in the following areas:

ADA Services 

In compliance with the American Disability Act, Talladega College is committed to providing an accessible learning experience for all students. If you are a student with a disability that qualifies under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and/or Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act and you require accommodations, please contact Student Affairs and the Director of Counseling/ADA Services for information on accommodations and procedures.  Requests for reasonable accommodations involve an interactive process and consist of a collaborative effort among the student, ADA services, faculty and staff. Please report appropriate documentation to ADA services as well informing your instructors of any possible needed accommodations.

It is the policy of Talladega College to provide accessible programs, services, activities, reasonable accommodations, and a harassment-free environment, for any student, with a documented disability as defined by Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, as amended, and by the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990. The following information needs to be submitted to the Director of Wellness and ADA Services within 60 days of the first day of classes.

Health Condition, Mobility, Hearing, Speech, or Visual Impairment:
A letter or report from the treating physician, orthopedic specialist, audiologist, otologist, speech pathologist, ophthalmologist, optometrist (as appropriate) which includes:
  • Clearly stated diagnosis
  • Defined levels of current functioning and any limitations
  • Current treatment and medication
  • Current letter/report (within 1 year), dated and signed
  • Necessary accommodations
Psychological Disorder:
A letter or report from a mental health professional who is impartial and not related to the student, i.e., psychiatrist, psychologist, neuropsychologist, licensed professional counselor, or clinical social worker which includes:
  • Clearly stated diagnosis based upon current DSM criteria
  • Defined levels of current functioning and any limitations
  • Assessment and evaluation instruments used, observations, history, etc.
  • Current treatment and medication
  • Current letter/report (within 1 year), dated and signed
  • Necessary accommodations
Emotional Support Animal:
A student seeking to keep an ESA at Talladega College must make a formal request through the Director of Wellness and ADA Services. The Director of Wellness and ADA Services will notify Residence Life and Housing and Facilities Management when a student is granted approval to bring an ESA into campus housing. To make a formal request, the student must submit recent documentation from a qualified professional (treating physician, psychiatrist, psychologist, or other mental health professionals) and must include a statement identifying a diagnosed medical or psychological disability and the reason (for what functional limitation) the ESA is required. There must be an identifiable and clearly established relationship between the individual’s disability and the support the animal provides. Once the documentation has been received, it will be reviewed for approval or denial by the President of Talladega College and/or Director of Wellness and ADA Services will consider any and all relevant city, state, and local ordinances when approving or denying an ESA request. Students will be notified of the decision in writing and/or by email. Once notified, the student must meet with the Director of Wellness and ADA Services to review and sign this policy, and to submit all appropriate documentation of the animal’s vaccinations and health. Copies of the animal’s documents will be kept on file with the Director of Wellness and ADA Services.  Any approval under this policy is valid for one academic year. Students must notify the Director of Wellness and ADA Services of their desire to continue utilizing this accommodation for each subsequent year when the housing and placement

Note: High School IEP, 504 Plan, and/or letter from a physician or other professional will not be sufficient documentation.
