Talladega College’s historic grounds were filled with an air of anticipation and excitement as graduates, faculty, staff, families, and distinguished guests gathered to celebrate 156 graduating students at the 149th Commencement Ceremony. Against the backdrop of the iconic campus buildings and under the canopy of blue skies, the Class of 2024 took their place in history, ready to embark on the next chapter of their journey.
The ceremony commenced with a processional, led by the Talladega College Drumline, as the graduates, adorned in academic regalia, filed into the Student Activity Center Arena. With heads held high and hearts full of pride, they took their seats, ready to receive the recognition they had worked tirelessly to achieve.
Addressing the graduates and assembled guests, provost and executive vice president for academic excellence and student engagement, Dr. Pernella Rowena Deams welcomed everyone to the momentous occasion and reflected on the significance of the day. "Today is an exciting day! We are celebrating the 149th Commencement exercise. Today one hundred and fifty-six students will receive degrees from Talladega College," Deams said. "This day is punctuated with anticipation and excitement as we celebrate our 2024 graduating class and honor our Golden Class of 1974. Each commencement is special and it is appropriate for us to give thanks in our own ways for the success of these graduates.”
After a brief moment of silent meditation, the president of Talladega College, Dr. Gregory J. Vincent highlighted the storied history of the college and the significance of its institutional mission.
“Our founders created a place where dreams could take flight regardless of the challenges they face. For over one hundred and fifty six years, we have continued to honor that legacy by providing our students with more than an education but an experience that empowers them to reach their full God-given potential and become agents of change in their respective communities and beyond,” Vincent said.
The keynote address was delivered by acclaimed actor and attorney, Hill Harper, whose words of wisdom and encouragement resonated deeply with the graduates. Drawing upon his own experiences and insights, Harper challenged the graduates to embrace the opportunities that lay ahead and to be steadfast in leaving a mark no matter where their journeys take them.
“Commencement in many ways is a time of transition. It’s a moment to look back on our journey and look forward to what we are going to accomplish. So, Talladega Class of 2024, I ask you–what fingerprints are you willing to leave in the bricks of the tapestry of this country coming out of this amazing institution? An institution that over fifty years ago took a woman named Dr. Marilyn Hill Harper and encouraged her at a time where women weren’t becoming doctors. This institution prepared my mother to become one of the first black anesthesiologists in this country,” Harper exclaimed. “Your crown has already been paid for by the folks who put their [fingerprints] on the brick. So, go ahead and wear it, Talladega Class of 2024 because you certainly are kings and queens.”
The Golden class of 1974 was recognized following Harper’s address, signaling the 50th anniversary of their commencement. “Being recognized for fifty years has been great! Some people say we already got our accolades when we first graduated, so why do it again? I say, because we’re still living, and breathing–why not?” said Nora Aaron, class of ‘74 alumna.
Honorary degrees were awarded to several distinguished honorees, including Hill Harper, Dr. Marilyn Hill Harper, Dr. Marc A. Love, Dr. Tracey Morant Adams, and Mr. James Thornton.
As the ceremony progressed, graduates were called to the stage one by one to receive their diplomas, a tangible symbol of their academic achievement and the fulfillment of their dreams. Applause filled the air as each graduate crossed the stage, greeted by the warm cheers [and occasional pot banging] of faculty, family, and friends.
Valedictorian, Eliza Croom touted the perseverance of she and her classmates noting that the start of their higher education career was nearly overshadowed by the pandemic.
“To the dynamic, determined, ambitious class of 2024–we made it! Four years ago, the infamous covid-19 had given us a run for our money but we pursued education anyway. Even in that time of uncertainty, we made it our mission to make opportunities with a vision of excellence. As we stand here on the cusp of a new chapter, let us reflect on the journey that has brought us to this moment,” she said.
As the ceremony drew to a close, the newly minted Talladega College alumni rose as one. With the traditional turning of the tassel and the jubilant sounds of the Talladega College alma mater playing, they bid farewell to the institution and stepped boldly into the world beyond. As they venture forth into the next chapter of their lives, the Class of 2024 carries with them the lessons learned, the friendships forged, and the cherished memories of their time at Talladega College. Armed with knowledge, skills, and the indomitable spirit of perseverance, they are ready to make their mark on the world and to continue the proud legacy of their alma mater.
