Talladega College Prepares to Welcome Students for the Fall 2023 Semester

August 9, 2023

Talladega College (TC) has announced that it is eagerly preparing to welcome new and returning students for the upcoming fall 2023 semester. With great excitement, the institution is gearing up to host its highly anticipated New Student Orientation and Welcome Week, ensuring a warm and inclusive start to the academic journey for its newest community of scholars.

New Student Orientation, scheduled for August 10-15, will provide incoming students with essential information to help them acclimate to campus life. Through a series of engaging sessions and interactive activities, the orientation program aims to equip students with the tools they need to thrive academically, socially, and personally. From campus tours and faculty introductions to information about student services and resources, the program will serve as a comprehensive introduction to the vibrant campus community Talladega College has to offer.

Dr. Gary Edwards, vice president and dean of students, said his team has worked tirelessly to elevate the orientation experiences for incoming students. He noted that this year's plans have focused on providing interactive and personalized student interactions. He hopes that the institution’s efforts will aid in scholars gaining a better sense of togetherness among their peers.

“Our goal is to facilitate a seamless transition for new students, creating a sense of belonging and community right from the beginning,” said Edwards. “These events include interactive workshops and innovative learning experiences, campus tours, social events, and networking opportunities designed to create a welcoming environment for new students, parents, and supporters.”

Dr. Edwards joined the Talladega family in late 2022. Since that time, he and his team have strategically worked to elevate students' experiences on the Talladega campus. A part of those efforts has been intentional planning, ensuring students gain needed resources and benefit from memorable encounters.

“I express my confidence that our team has developed an innovative New Student Orientation experience that fosters a welcoming, engaging, and inclusive environment for all students,” said Edwards. “As we foster a sense of community and instill a passion for learning, I am certain our incoming students will receive a transformative and fulfilling college experience.”

Following Orientation, the College will kick off Welcome Week, a dynamic series of events designed to promote connections among students, faculty, and staff. From August 13-18, the campus will come alive with various activities, including social gatherings, workshops, and collaborative projects. Welcome Week encourages new and returning students to engage with their peers, explore extracurricular opportunities, and immerse themselves in the vibrant spirit of Talladega College.

Edwards said that the goal behind these thoughtfully planned events, reflected in the theming of this year’s Welcome Week, is to facilitate a seamless transition for new students, creating a
sense of belonging and community right from the beginning. He shared that students will have the opportunity to learn while simultaneously building a tribe of peers who hold varying backgrounds and perspectives.

“The Welcome Week theme ‘On 627 Block’ reflects our commitment to foster a sense of belonging through student life programs and events, and collaborative approaches that encourage students to explore the many opportunities within our college's 627 block radius,” added Edwards.

Beyond New Student Orientation and Welcome Week, Edwards expressed that the College has been deliberate in its efforts to provide holistic support for its students. Measures have been taken to address the needs of learners on a multitude of levels, which he believes will aid students in persisting toward their intended goals.

“As students embark on their collegiate journey, we recognize that it can be both exciting and challenging. The Student Success Center provides tutorial services, career counseling, and student success coaching to help its students achieve their academic and professional goals,” added Edwards. “We offer various student-led clubs and organizations, student programs, activities, and events. We ensure our students' well-being by providing counseling services, health and wellness programs, and a supportive environment at Talladega College.”

As one of the nation's premier historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs), Talladega College takes pride in offering a nurturing and empowering educational environment. The institution, known for its rich history and commitment to academic excellence, is excited to warmly welcome the incoming class of talented and diverse individuals.
