Acclaimed Actor and Philanthropist Hill Harper to Keynote 149th Commencement Exercises

Talladega College has announced that award-winning actor, best-selling author, and well-known philanthropist Hill Harper will deliver the keynote address at its 149th Commencement Exercises. The ceremony is set to take place at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday, May 5, 2024, in the Student Activity Center Arena. Harper, celebrated for his roles as Dr. Sheldon Hawkes on “CSI: NY” and Dr. Marcus Andrews on “The Good Doctor,” is also a magna cum laude graduate from Brown University and a cum laude graduate from Harvard Law School. Harper’s literary contributions include several New York Times bestsellers, such as “Letters to a Young Brother” and “The Conversation.” His commitment to empowerment and service has been acknowledged with seven NAACP Image Awards.

Dr. Gregory J. Vincent, president of Talladega College, expressed the College’s excitement about Harper’s upcoming address. “Mr. Harper’s exceptional achievements in the arts and his commitment to education and service reflect the values we instill in our students,” said Vincent. “His insights will undoubtedly inspire our graduates as they embark on the next chapter of their lives.”

This event holds additional significance as it honors the family legacy of Hill Harper at Talladega College. His mother, Marilyn Hill Harper, a 1958 graduate of the college, will be present at the ceremony. Marilyn’s dedication to education and community service aligns with the College’s core values, making her son’s role as keynote speaker all the more meaningful.

Harper, a Detroit resident and entrepreneur, is actively involved in various sectors. As a cancer survivor, Harper served on the President’s Cancer Panel after an appointment by President Obama in 2011. The Pierce and Hill Harper Arts Foundation, displaying his commitment to service and the betterment of society.

A decorated scholar and Marine Corps Officer Candidates School graduate, Harper has received 10 honorary doctoral degrees. His business ventures include ownership of The Roasting Plant coffee franchise, co-ownership of A-Frame Brands, and the International House hotel in New Orleans. A candidate for the U.S. Senate representing Michigan, Harper’s passion extends to economic empowerment, financial literacy, and social justice.
