Washington Monthly, Princeton Review and U.S. News & World Report Rank Talladega College Among Top Colleges

September 11, 2023

Recent higher education rankings by Washington Monthly place Talladega College in the top 15 percent overall of colleges that primarily grant bachelor’s degrees and in the top 5 percent for social mobility.

According to the newly released 2023 Washington Monthly college rankings, Talladega College is 36th overall among 242 colleges and 12th for social mobility. The College also ranked 18th among 288 colleges and universities for the “Best Bang for the Buck” ratings in the Southeast, putting it in the top 10 percent of those institutions.

But Washington Monthly is not the only college ranking outlet to highly rate Talladega College. U.S. News and World Report placed Talladega at 13th for Social Mobility nationwide in its 2022-2023 rankings. Additionally, the Princeton Review’s newly released rankings placed Talladega as one of the best colleges in the top 109, out of the 2,300 colleges and universities in the South. Princeton Review does not assign number ranks within that top 109 category. For the social mobility ranking, U.S. News and World Report assesses graduation rates for Pell-grant students.

“We are so pleased with Talladega College’s recent rankings,” said President Gregory J. Vincent. “We believe the series of rankings fully represent Talladega College’s standing among institutions of higher education and will help us build upon our designation as a National Center for Academic Excellence in Cybersecurity. The social mobility ranks are especially important to Talladega as they reflect our mission and values and those of HBCUs in general.”

Vincent added, “The rankings reveal Talladega College is continuing to faithfully fulfill the sacred mission of our founders in 1867 to educate and empower generations of young people and serve as an incubator of educational and economic opportunities.”

The College’s holistic student-first perspective has helped make social mobility one of Talladega’s strong advantages. By ensuring a high number of students graduate relative to enrollment and incur low debt, the College truly makes a difference to students and their families.

Talladega Grads Serve Community, State, and Nation The nonprofit Washington Monthly ranks colleges on three equally weighted portions: social mobility, research, and community and national service. As part of its rationale, the magazine states, “This means that top-ranked colleges needed to be excellent across the full breadth of our measures, rather than excelling in just one measure.” Additionally, the rankings use a three-year average to determine progress.

President Vincent acknowledged Washington Monthly’s research score, which for colleges is based on the number of grads who go on to get PhDs, and the community and national service score reflect back on Talladega’s inspiring faculty and alumni who serve as role models. An estimated 80 percent of graduates go on to get advanced degrees. Service is also a key component of both Talladega College’s mission and core values.

“We prepare our students to see the value of service in many aspects of their lives. A countless number of alumni have made invaluable contributions to science, medicine, and education. Service truly is a hallmark of Talladega College,” said Vincent.
